Yarn Delivery for Swindon Big Knit Welcomes New Helping Hands from Local Residential Home

Swindon Big Knit Welcomes New Helping Hands from Local Retirement Living Complex

Swindon Big Knit has enjoyed another heart‑warming week as the project continues to grow across the community. In a wonderful and unexpected turn, a local Retirement Living Complex reached out to offer their support; a gesture that left volunteers delighted and deeply moved. When the call came through, volunteer coordinator Tracey Major visited the home yesterday, where she found around ten residents gathered in a cosy circle of chairs, ready and eager to get knitting and crocheting.

“It was such a lovely surprise,” Tracey said. “You don’t expect a residential home to contact you and ask how they can help. The moment I walked in, they were smiling, chatting and genuinely excited to be part of Swindon Big Knit. It was just beautiful.”

The residents have chosen to focus on knitting squares, with one resident immediately volunteering to sew some of the squares together into finished blankets. “She just looked at me and said, ‘Oh, I can do that for you'” Tracey added. “It was such a kind, natural offer; you could tell she was thrilled to be helping.”

Although the home prefers to stay out of photos and publicity, their enthusiasm for crafting is unmistakable. Tracey left them a selection of wool to get started, the group will be knitting angels for the Big Knit project. Their contribution will help support the growing number of handmade items being created across Swindon.

“What struck me most was how happy they were to be involved,” Tracey said. “It just goes to show you’re never too old to enjoy crafting or to make a difference. People are so willing to give their time to help others, and that’s what makes this project so special.”

Blankets of Hope: Crafting Comfort for Swindon’s Homeless Community

The knitting Angles will be helping the ongoing Blankets of Hope initiative, a community project dedicated to creating single‑sized, hand‑crafted blankets for people experiencing homelessness and vulnerability in Swindon. Volunteers across the town are knitting and crocheting squares and panels, which are then joined together to form warm, comforting blankets designed to offer both physical warmth and a reminder that the community cares.

“The Blankets of Hope project has really touched people,” Tracey explained. “Every square represents someone giving a little bit of their time to help someone they’ll probably never meet. It’s crafting with purpose and it means so much to those who receive the blankets.”

The project continues to grow as more makers join in, from seasoned knitters to complete beginners picking up needles for the first time. Each blanket is a patchwork of kindness, stitched together by volunteers of all ages and abilities.

A Community Stitched Together

This week’s events highlight the heart of Swindon Big Knit; creativity, kindness and community spirit. Whether it’s residents in a Retirement Living Complex knitting, volunteers crafting squares at home, or groups working together on Blankets of Hope, the project continues to show how small acts of making can create a big impact. As Tracey summed up: “It’s amazing how many people are happy to devote their time to help others. Every stitch tells a story and together, we’re making something truly special for Swindon.”
